The Art of Saju
For over 2,000 years, East Asian sages have read the patterns of heaven and earth embedded in the moment of a person's birth — revealing character, destiny, and the natural rhythm of a life.
What is Saju (四柱)?
Saju literally means four pillars — four time pillars that define the moment of birth: Year (年), Month (月), Day (日), and Hour (時). These four pillars form eight characters called Paljja (八字), each carrying a unique combination of Yin-Yang energy and one of the Five Elements (五行).
Unlike Western astrology, which focuses primarily on the position of the sun, Saju constructs a complete map from four temporal dimensions simultaneously — a layered, nuanced portrait of who you are and how you move through life.
The Four Pillars
Represents ancestral roots, societal influences, and the broad current of destiny.
Holds parents, early environment, career tendencies, and life themes in your 20s–30s.
The most personal pillar — represents your core self and your relationship with a spouse.
Contains children, later years, inner desires, and the expression of your will.
What is a Birth Chart?
Every person's Saju is unique. Below is an example birth chart — a visual map of the eight characters that define your energy blueprint.

Heavenly Stems (天干) — Top Row
The 10 Heavenly Stems cycle through the Five Elements with Yin-Yang polarity. They show how the energy of each pillar expresses outwardly — its quality.
Earthly Branches (地支) — Bottom Row
The 12 Earthly Branches link to zodiac animals and contain hidden elemental energy within — the depth and roots of each pillar's influence.
Four stem-branch pairs combine to form Paljja (八字) — the Eight Characters — which is why Saju is also called Sajupallja (사주팔자). A Saju reader interprets not each of the 8 characters alone but the interactions between all of them.
Yin and Yang (陰陽)
Every element and every moment carries a Yin (陰) or Yang (陽) polarity. Yang is active, expansive, outward-facing energy — warmth, daylight, initiative. Yin is receptive, concentrated, inward energy — stillness, depth, intuition.
Neither is superior. Saju looks at the balance of Yin and Yang across the four pillars. A heavily Yang chart may indicate an energetic, action-oriented person who should cultivate rest. A heavily Yin chart may indicate a deeply reflective person who benefits from bolder action.

The Five Elements (五行)
The Five Elements are not physical substances but phases of energy — dynamic forces that cycle through nature, time, and the human body.
Growth, vision, creativity
Passion, expression, joy
Stability, nurturing, trust
Precision, discipline, clarity
Wisdom, adaptability, depth
The Five Elements interact in two cycles: the Generating Cycle (Wood feeds Fire → Fire creates Earth → Earth holds Metal → Metal collects Water → Water nourishes Wood) and the Controlling Cycle (Wood breaks Earth → Earth dams Water → Water quenches Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal cuts Wood). Saju analysis reveals which of your elemental energies are abundant and which are lacking.
Why Does Birth Time Matter?
The exact moment of birth places the sun, moon, and heavenly stems in a specific configuration. A difference of just one hour can completely change the Hour Pillar — altering inner desires, the relationship with children, and the tone of later years.
Similarly, whether a birth date is recorded in the Solar (Gregorian) or Lunar calendar makes a significant difference. Traditional Saju masters work with the solar calendar (specifically the 24 Solar Terms — Jeolgi), so lunar dates must be converted before pillars can be correctly assigned.
