The five elements: how Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water interact

Every character in a Saju chart belongs to one of five elements. Two cycles — feeding and restraining — decide how they interact, and a missing element is a direction, not a defect.

Two cycles

The five elements are linked by two loops. In the feeding cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire produces Earth (ash), Earth yields Metal, Metal carries Water (condensation), and Water grows Wood. In the restraining cycle, Wood breaks Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.

Feeding is support; restraining is discipline. A chart needs both. Fire with no Wood has nothing to burn; Fire with no Water has no limit. Reading a chart is largely asking which loops are active and which are broken.

Counting your elements

Each of the eight characters carries an element, so the simplest chart reading is a tally out of eight (or six, without the birth hour). A count of three or more is dominant; a count of zero is missing. Our reading shows this as both a percentage bar and a cycle wheel, where missing elements appear as dotted circles.

A missing element is a direction

Beginners worry about zeros. In practice, a missing element tells you where to draw strength from — the friends, work, places and habits that supply it. A chart with no Wood tends to gain from learning, mentors and green surroundings. A chart with no Water gains from rest, travel and flexibility. The element you lack is the one that changes your life fastest when added.

The reverse also matters. An element that appears four or five times overwhelms the chart and needs an outlet. Too much Fire burns out; too much Earth stagnates; too much Water drifts.

Elements and the calendar

Years, months and days also carry elements. When the calendar brings an element you lack, that period feels easier; when it doubles an element you already have too much of, it feels heavier. This is the basis of the annual and monthly readings, and of the 10-year luck cycles.
