Eight characters, four pillars
Saju means 'four pillars'. Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar made of two characters: a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. Four pillars, eight characters — that is the whole chart. Korean readers call it 사주팔자 (saju palja), literally 'four pillars, eight characters'.
The characters are not symbols invented for fortune-telling. They are the traditional East Asian calendar itself. Every year, month, day and two-hour period has a stem-and-branch name, cycling through sixty combinations. A Saju chart is simply the calendar coordinates of the moment you were born.
What each pillar stands for
The year pillar is your roots: ancestry, the family and era you were born into, and how you appear to the outside world. The month pillar is your stage: career, social life, and the environment where you act as an adult. The day pillar is you — its top character is your core self, called the Day Master, and its bottom character is the seat of your partner. The hour pillar is the fruit: children, later life, and what you leave behind.
If you do not know your birth hour, you can still read the first three pillars. Six characters show your temperament, relationships and career direction clearly. The hour pillar adds precision about later life and children, which is why our reading asks for it but does not require it.
Why it is not a horoscope
Western sun-sign astrology sorts people into twelve groups by birth month. Saju has 518,400 possible charts before the hour is even counted, and it describes structure rather than personality labels. Two people born in the same month can have opposite charts, because the day pillar changes every 24 hours and the stems and branches interact differently.
Saju also does not predict fixed events. It reads tendencies — which element you lean on, where your energy leaks, when the calendar supports you. The reading is a map of your terrain, not a schedule of what will happen.
How to read your own chart
Start with the Day Master, the top character of your day pillar. It tells you which of ten natures you are — a tall tree, a lantern, an ocean, a jewel and so on. Then count your five elements across all eight characters to see what dominates and what is missing. Finally, look at how the other characters relate to your Day Master through the Ten Gods, which map each character to wealth, career, talent, learning or self.
